A green loan is a type of home loan top-up or personal loan offered by major New Zealand banks specifically for energy-efficient upgrades like solar, batteries and EV chargers, usually at a lower interest rate than a standard loan. They’re available right now, independent of any election outcome, though rates, terms and eligibility vary by bank.
Rates and terms change regularly, so figures aren’t quoted in this article. Always confirm current details directly with your bank.
Green loans are generally structured as a reduced-rate borrowing option for approved energy-efficiency purposes. Common features include a lower interest rate than standard personal loans, a capped borrowing amount, and a fixed term at the discounted rate before it reverts to the bank’s standard lending rate. Some lenders also require the upgrade to meet specific efficiency standards or use accredited products.
Several major New Zealand banks currently offer some form of green loan or green home loan top-up, aimed at energy-efficient upgrades. Availability, rates and conditions differ between banks and change over time, so this isn’t something we’d try to summarise with a specific number here. The most reliable approach is to check directly with your own bank, or compare a couple, before deciding.
Green loans generally aren’t limited to solar. They commonly cover a range of energy-efficiency upgrades, including:
– Solar panel installation
– Battery storage systems
– EV chargers – Heat pumps
– Insulation and double glazing
This means a single green loan application could potentially cover more than just your solar system, worth asking your bank about if you’re planning several upgrades at once.
Before applying, it’s worth getting clear answers on:
1. What’s the interest rate, and how long does it apply before reverting to a standard rate?
2. Is there a maximum loan amount, and does it cover the full cost of a typical solar installation?
3. Do I need to use specific accredited products or installers to qualify?
4. Is this a top-up to my existing mortgage, or a separate loan?
5. Are there any set-up fees or early repayment conditions?
Before you can have a genuinely useful conversation with your bank about a green loan, it helps to know exactly what you’re financing. A solar assessment gives you a realistic system size and cost estimate based on your actual property and power use, so you’re walking into that finance conversation with real numbers, not a rough guess. We can help with that technical side, sizing the right system for your property, but for the finance decision itself, your bank or a licensed financial adviser is the right person to talk to.
It’s worth being clear that green loans are entirely separate from the solar finance policies currently being proposed by political parties ahead of this year’s election. Green loans exist today, offered independently by individual banks. The proposed election schemes are not law, and may or may not eventuate in their current form. If you want the detail on those proposals, we’ve broken them down in Solar and the 2026 Election: What National, Labour and the Greens Are Actually Promising. Read here.
